KS4 Curriculum

Students will be given the opportunity to gain an extra qualification within the sports sector. The two options offered within the PE department are BTEC Sport and OCR GCSE Physical Education.

BTEC Sport: Students will complete four units; three internal coursework units: practical sports performance, designing a personal training programme and leading sports events. And one external online exam: fitness testing for sport and exercise.

GCSE PE: Students will be assessed through a unit of coursework, their practical ability across three sports and two 1-hour exams. The topic areas include: anatomy and physiology, physical training, socio-cultural influences on sports, sport psychology and health, fitness and well-being.

In addition to these options in PE students will continue to have the choice to take part regularly in competitive sports and activities outside school through our extra-curricular timetable and representing Haywood Academy at local and city competitions.

At Haywood Academy we regard enrichment experiences as a vital part to develop your son/daughter as a person. In the PE department we traditionally offer a wide range of enrichment activities that your son/daughter will have the opportunity to engage in, as our vision is to provide students with opportunities that will increase life experiences for the better and develop respect, hard work, community spirit and the desire to aspire to be better.

Ski trips, Outward Bound experiences, professional sports fixtures and Netball tours are just a few opportunities that will be on offer to you as a Haywood Academy student. We like to think that we have traditions at the academy and these are just a few trips and experiences that you will have chance to involve yourself in. Rewarding students for their efforts and hard work is something that is deep routed in our community and does not go unmissed!

In addition to the wide range of trips and enrichment activities you can involve yourself in, we also offer sports clubs that take place every night of the week. From Football, Netball, trampolining, Volleyball, Basketball, Rounder’s, Tennis, Badminton are just a taste of the of sports that we offer at the Academy.

These can lead onto representing the school in a wide range of sports or just to enjoy a sports club environment. The sports clubs and fixtures are again opportunities that we provide that are essential to creating amazing learning experiences that enhance lives. We believe that giving our students these opportunities is what makes Haywood the outstanding community it is known for.

In addition to our traditions we have also introduced the Duke of Edinburgh qualification that is offered to all of our students. At Haywood we recognize the importance of opportunities and this is another fantastic opportunity that sets your son/daughter apart from others. There is also opportunities linking to developing leadership skills and knowledge which is built around practical experiences with our local primary schools. It is tradition that we support many of our local primary schools for events such as sports days and festivals which your son/daughter can involve themselves in.

Many of our former students such as Benjamin Williams (Olympic Triple Jumper), Ciaran Coates (Stoke City FC) and Ryan Colclough (Crewe Alexandra) are just a few names to mention who have done extremely well in the world of sport following on from an education at Haywood Academy.
