The Academy has responded swiftly and appropriately using the full power of our behaviour policy. Haywood Academy does not tolerate any of the behaviours demonstrated in or around this incident.
The student and parents affected by this assault have been fully supported and confirm that the school has ‘reacted appropriately and quickly’. Parents also confirm that they feel the Academy has been ‘hugely supportive’ and responded in a ‘sensitive manner’, putting the ‘welfare’ of their child at the centre of all interactions.
The staff at Haywood are fully committed to the education and welfare of every member of our student community, both in and out of school. Academy staff have high expectations of student conduct and these do not end at the school gate or at the end of the day. That is why this incident has been sanctioned accordingly, despite it happening after the end of the Academy day on Friday.
Appropriate action has been taken at every level – whether that has been a specific programme of educational intervention, involvement with families and community members or liaison with authorities. A wider issue here relates to the dangers of misusing mobile technology and social media, educating students on appropriate use of these platforms and what to do if someone needs help. This is work that the Academy and our partners will continue to deliver so that young people understand the ramifications fully.
We have an ongoing commitment to help students find their place in the world. We do not tolerate violence and were recently praised by Ofsted for our culture of care – something we pride ourselves on and will continue to practice.
